Betty met Arthur in Blackpool where she was stationed as a Waaf in the war. He as a medical sergeant. He returned to the States, but they corresponded, and prompted by her letters he flew back to England, and they married. But neither were happy in post-war Britain, grey and rationed. So they sailed for New York 1 December 1949.
