Note on Marriage

At the time of their wedding Nicholas is at Higher Town Farm Lapford. Witnesses are Fred Pickett, Nellie Wright and Lewis Wright.

Note on Husband: Nicholas Samuel PITTS

Mum took me to Muckwell farm in the early 90s.

Nicholas Pitts is at Higher Town Farm, Lapford at the time of their marriage, though the Voters List for that period shows the previous tenant there. They are still there in the 1918 Voters List. By 1919 Samuel Down is there. They probably went to Morchard Bishop then. This is before they moved to Gollick Park. The Pitts family joined the Coles at Gollic Park, Clayhidon in April 1923. Laurie Pitts, Sadie and Leslie Cole all joined the school there in April 1923.In 1935 Nicholas, Emma K and Lewis Laurence are at Turningways Morchard Bishop.December 1938, based on parish notes at Devon Record Office. In 1939 Nicholas,Emma K and Sadie are registered in the Voters List at Alma Cottage, Morchard Bishop.By December 1939 they are at Redhill, which may be the location of Alma Cottage. It was at Redhill that the disastrous fire in December 1939 destroyed all the possessions of Grandfather, Grandmother, Laurie and Mother. In the early 40s they are at 8 Council Houses, Morchard Bishop - probably where they were rehoused after the fire. By 1943-44 they are at East Street Crediton.

Note on Wife: Emma Kathleen WRIGHT

Found note dated 14.1.48 from husband Nicholas requesting copy of birth certificate, with names and dates.

MMB's diary note - Miss Kate Wright went down to Miss Waller, 1898.On census day 1901 Emma Kathleen was described as help at the house of Mr William E Waller,67 and Mrs Susan Waller,58, at 34 Victoria Street, Exmouth - sister Nellie was visiting. Also visiting was Ellen Lake, of Cruwys Morchard - birthplace of Mrs Waller. Mr Waller was from Puddington. In 1911 Emma Kathleen is still with the Wallers, now at 39 Victoria Road, Exmouth, described as Assistant.

Emma was on holiday at Sandy Bay, Littleham staying with son Laurie in 1954. Whilst out walking in high winds she was blown over, and in the fall fatally injured herself. Four and a half year old grandson Nicholas had screamed when she told him that she was going on holiday and he was inconsolable, saying prophetically that he would never see his gran again.
