CORONER’S REBUKE
“ BRUTAL PARTNER WHO TOLD
A PACK OF LIES”
“Finished! Love to all.” This farewell message, written on a bank paying-in slip , was left by Stanley James Pickett, aged 28. A tobacconist of Pimlico, who was found gassed in his room over the shop on Thursday.
His sister, Edith Maud Duke, stated at the inquest st Westminster yesterday that when she last saw him he was very upset, and told her his partner was going to turn him out in March.
Walter Groves Dolden, tobacconist, said he made Pickett’s acquaintance through frequenting a billiard-room. Pickett afterwards took him into partnership, but he (Dolden) put no money into the concern. Pickett was incapable of conducting the business, which went down, and when he (Dolden) opened another shop he sent a girl to the Pimlico shop to assist Pickett. He and Pickett had each been drawing £2 5s. from the Pimlico shop. The other shop belonged to him (Dolden).
The Coroner (Mr. Ingleby Oddie): What about the lease at Pimlico coming to an end and your turning Pickett out?
Dolden: That is not true. I would not turn him out.
Mr.Oddie: Don’t tell lies to me. Of course you could. Were you going to turn him out? – Dolden: Yes, next March.
Mr. Oddie: Why? – Dolden: Because he was a perfect failure.
Mr. Oddie: He had been very kind to you, and yet, because the business goes down, you seek to turn him out. That will do. Stand down. You know what I think of you.
Summing up, the Coroner said it was a miserable story of a young man wh started in business, and was not very successful, although he put all his money into it. He met a so-called friend in Dolden, and allowed him to come in as a partner, although he had not a penny-piece in the business.
Since then Dolden had started another shop in another part of London, and quietly sold the lease of the Pimlico business over Pickett’s head. “He has the audacity to stand in the witness-box and tell a whole pack of lies,” said Mr. Oddie , with emphasis, “ and this brutal partner has worried this poor man to death.”
The Coroner recorded “Suicide while of unsound mind.”
