| The Ipswich Journal, Saturday March 31st 1877 COLCHESTER SUICIDE OF MISS ROSA MARY RALLING On Monday afternoon, the Borough Coroner, A.E.Church Esq., held an inquiry at the Globe Inn, Military Road, Colchester, touching the death by her own hand, of Rosa Mary Ralling, daughter of the late Thomas and Rosetta Sophia Ralling, and sister of Mr. Thomas J. Ralling, of Mount Cottage, Military Road, and of the Essex Standard Office. The deceased, who was 24 years of age, had at different times held situations as a governess, but since Christmas she had been residing with Mr. Thomas J.Ralling. For some weeks past she had been in a low and depressed state of mind, and the medical attendant, Mr.Worts, on being spoken to on the subject, advised a change of air and scene, and accordingly on Sunday fortnight the deceased and Miss Wheeler, an old friend of the family, who had been staying as a companion for deceased and her sister, went to Copford. They returned home on Thursday last, and deceased appeared better for the change. On Saturday afternoon she seemed unusually cheerful, and about quarter-past four o’clock went up-stairs. As she did not come down in ten minutes Miss Wheeler went up-stairs and saw he looking at the window, and she said she was coming down directly. As she did not come down after ten minutes had elapsed Miss Wheeler again went to the bed-room and found the door shut and not locked – for all the locks and fastenings had been taken off the doors. On going into the room she was horrified at finding deceased by a leather strap fastened to the top of an Arabian bedstead. Life was then extinct. In answer to the Coroner as to why the locks and fastenings had been taken off the doors, Miss Wheeler said it was done because the brothers of deceased were afraid, owing to her distressed state of mind, and they thought it was safest to have the fastenings off. The Coroner said it was a very proper precaution. In summing up the evidence to the Jury he remarked that they must all deeply sympathise with the family, who, he was sure the Jury would feel, had done everything they possibly could for deceased. The Jury immediately returned a verdict of “Temporary Insanity;” and the Foreman (Mr.J.Fitch), on their behalf, expressed their deep sympathy with Mr. Ralling and the members of the family in their affliction. | ||
