SUICIDE AT SANDFORD
An inquest was held yesterday at the Lamb Inn, Sandford, on the body of Mrs. Sarah Hattin, who was found on Sunday evening last hanging to a nail in an outhouse adjoining her residence at Withywind, about a mile from the village of Sandford. She had been missing since the previous Wednesday afternoon, and it was supposed by her friends that she had gone on a visit to Dowrich Mills. The deceased was widow of Mr. James Hattin, late of Sturridge Farm, Sandford. – The Deputy Coroner (Mr.Charles E.Cox, of Honiton) stated that he had been unable to attend earlier, having only received notice on the previous morning. – The jury having viewed the body, the following evidence was taken:-- Mr.James Wright, of the firm of the West of England Iron Works, stated that he last saw the deceased alive between 12 and 1 o’clock on Wednesday. She was then apparently in her usual health. He was distantly related to her, she being the stepmother of his wife. The deceased was 70 years of age last birthday. She had been rather eccentric for a considerable time past, and had been especially so since her husband’s death in May. She was in comfortable circumstances, and lived by herself. She was quite able to take care of herself. The deceased was in the habit of visiting his house. She was at his house about three weeks ago. He called at her place on Wednesday, and asked if she was in want of anything. This was his usual practice.—By the Coroner: He had heard from the bailiff that she was to leave the house, but as far as he knew, this had not been communicated to her. He went there on Sunday night, and finding the door locked he called upon George Mortimer, a farm-labourer, to bring a ladder, by means of which they looked into the bedroom window. They saw nothing and proceeded to an outhouse. On bursting open the door they discovered the deceased facing them, and hanging by the neck. She was suspended from one of the joists by the small piece of silk produced. Witness and Mortimer entered the outhouse together. She was quite dead.—George Mortimer, a labourer living in an adjoining cottage, gave similar evidence as to the finding of the body.—Mr. H. M. Body, medical practitioner, of Crediton, was next called, and deposed to the excitable temperament of the deceased. It had struck him very forcibly at the time he was attending her husband in his last illness. He was not at all surprised at hearing that she had committed suicide. – Mr. Wright, in answer to the Coroner, said that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition at the time it was found. – The jury returned a verdict that the deceased committed suicide while of unsound mind.
