Nov 1986 A woman who drowned in Pontefract park lake was suffering from a psychiatric illness a Wakefield Inquest was told. It was stated that Barbara Boydell Sutcliffe, aged 55, of Chequers Close, Pontefract, had taken a number of overdoses during the past year and had been treated for depression. She was seen floating on her back by three men who were unable to help her. Recording an open verdict, coroner Mr. Philip Gill said the death was due to drowning and was probably a symptom of a personality disorder. Mr. George Drake said in his statement that he was walking his dog in the park when he saw a woman walking along the side of the lake. “Suddenly she turned towards the lake and disappeared from my view. I couldn’t believe what I had seen. I was about 150 yards away. “I immediately told two men what I had seen. The woman was then floating on her back about ten to fifteen yards out. We shouted to her but all she did was raise her arm. “I didn’t see her go under the water. One of the men tried to step into the water, but it was too deep and cold. “The parkkeeper got a boat out to her. I cannot say whether she walked, jumped or fell into the water.” Her husband, Mr. Kenneth Sutcliffe said they had been married for three years [sic] and during the past year his wife suffered from anxiety and received treatment at Pontefract General Infirmary. He said she took an overdose on April 11 and another on April 24, both of prescribed tablets. Her depression did not seem to improve and she said she would take her own life. Mr. Sutcliffe said, “I didn’t believe her.” The inquest was told the hospital records showed a history of psychiatric illness and a personality disorder. |
