William was innkeeper at the Green Dragon Crediton at least from 1841 when the census shows him as a publican in the High Street, as in 1851.In Pigots 1822-23 Directory for Crediton there are confusingly three Miltons running pubs. Here William Milton is landlord of the Half Moon, S Milton is running the Green Dragon, and James Milton the London Inn. There was a Green Dragon in North Street that closed in 1840, and the Green Dragon in High Street was closed in 1880. At some point in its history a dead man was found lying in the hearth of the tap room one morning. There were threats of closure if it didn't take some trouble to clean up its act. The Half Moon was closed in about 1870. The London Inn was at 16 High Street - was the George until 1813 when the name changed, and was closed in 1870.
Slaters Directory for Berks, Cornwall Devon, Dorset 1852-53 etc shows William Milton as innkeeper of the Green Dragon, but he died before it was published.
Whites 1850 Directory shows W.Milton,Green Dragon, High Street. It was located at the entrance to St Saviours.
In 1841 William was living with wife Mary, and daughters Emma c25, Caroline c 10 and son John c. 20
On 27 May 1852 The Licence of the Green Dragon was transferred from Mary Milton to Richard Brookland. Transferred to John Jennings in 1853. Jennings went bankrupt in the following year.
