Arthur enlisted in the Volunteer Reserve, in the 3rd Bn City of London Royal Fusiliers on 6th March 1900. He gained promotion in the Reserve to Company Sergeant. On the outbreak of war he joined the Bn as a regular, as a Company Sergeant, and served in Malta from September 1914 to January 1915 and then in France from January 1915 to 9 May 1915 when he was wounded in the head by a bomb. He was shipped back to England on 28th May 1915, and finally discharged on with a pension on 5th May 1916, being no longer fit to serve.
