In 1841 Richard is a Male Servant at Washbrook Mill, Dodbrooke, where a Philip Hingston (Jane's family) is miller. Richard and Susanna appear in the 1851 census when Richard is the miller at LurgeCoombe Mill, Ashburton, and they appear in the Canadian census for 1851/52 in St Malachy, Beauharnois County, Canada East(Quebec) .Children Richard and Mary are with them in Canada.

In the 1861Canada Census Richard can be found as an inmate of the Kingston Penitentiary, in the census for Portsmouth Village, Frontenac County, Canada West. Portsmouth Village is now part of Kingston, which was the capital of Canada in 1861.

Richard was imprioned for arson. He committed his crime in Leeds and Grenville, a county adjoining Frontenac.1
