Obituary of Wally
James "Wally" DONALD , 84, resident of Riverside, CO, passed away October 23, 2008, at The Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland.
He was born January 3, 1924, in Kekaha, Kauai, Hawaii.
During his life, he enjoyed music, singing, sailing, camping, attending church, watching football, and living in the mountains. He was an avid walker and loved being outdoors in nature.
He will be dearly missed by his wife Sharyn; as well as his nieces, Patti, Brenda, Carol, Tambrey, Dunn and Jamie; nephews, Donald, Kimo, Michael and Ralph; seven great-nieces and six great-nephews; Kris and Ed; and a lifetime of friends.
Wally taught in the English Department at the University of Colorado, Boulder and was an editor for Abstracts of English Studies and later, English Language Notes. He retired from the University in 1989.

Note on Husband: James Wallace DONALD

James went to Hawaii in 1897 following his graduation from the Royal Technical School of Glasgow. He had been planning to go to Alaska to search for gold when it seems he was recruited by Reginald Fursey. He met Reginald's sister Violet in Hawaii and married her. He had returned to England early in the 20th century, as we find him at Ellis Island, having sailed from Liverpool on the SS Canonia on 11th November 1905. He is enroute to Hawaii, and his contact details are c/o the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, New York.

He worked with the Makaweli plantation, the McBride plantation and the Honokaa Sugar Co., before moving to the Kekaha Sugar Co for the last 20 years of his life.

Note on Wife: Violet Christine FURSEY

From Ralph Miller "Violet died in about 1979 in Colorado. She died of successive mini strokes that eventually left her basically helpless. Her husband died in about 1936. The family says he died of heart attack, but I think he died of alcoholism. Alcoholism appears to run in the family as my grandmother was probably one herself - known to drink two bottles of Dubonnet sherry in a day. "

Violet was the only one of Elizabeth's children to have children herself.

Violet was at first at Honokaa,Hamakua Island. She taught at a public school in Honolulu.

Violet's journeys:

On 23rd October 1909 Violet sailed on the Mauretania from Liverpool to New York, arriving on 29th October. Her address in the UK had been with William Colbourne, 21 Albany Terrace, Leamington (wrongly recorded at Ellis Island as Coleman). It seems that it was on this journey that Violet emigrated to Hawaii.

These memories of her early life and her emigration were found in the papers of her son James Wallace Donald after his death in 2008.

23 September 1926, from Sydney Australia to Vancouver, British Columbia on the RMMS Aorangi, arriving on 14 October 1926, en route to England, accompanied by Margaret, Ruth, James and Elizabeth.

She and the children sailed from Montreal and arrived at Southampton on 29th October 1926, on board the SS Minnedosa.

She arrived at Quebec on 27 May 1927, from Southampton on board the Empress of Scotland, "in transit to Hawaiian Islands via Vancouver". She was accompanied by son James.

From Ralph Miller "My mother and her sisters attended St. Michael's "public" school somewhere near there. My great aunt Bertha supposedly took them from Hawaii across Canada to England when my mom was entering what we call ninth grade. She apparently stayed in England four

years before returning to Hawaii."

In fact we can see from the above that it was mother Violet, not Bertha, who accompanied her children, taking young James there and back, but leaving the girls at school.

On 23 June 1939 she sailed from Honolulu arriving at Port Victoria, Vancouver on 28 June 1939,on the Empress of Canada, accompanied by son James. Their destination address is 4028 Brookland Avenue, Seattle, Washington.

She arrived at New York on 28 June 1948, having sailed from Honolulu on La Salle on June 6 1948. Her destination address was141 E 76th Street, New York

She arrived at Southampton of the 8th November 1953 on the Maasdam. Described as a teacher, her intended English address is 252 Dyke Road, Brighton.
