Baptised as the base son of Mary Fey. In 1851 he is recorded as son-in-law, living with his mother and step father at Western Road, Crediton.In 1861 he is living with his grandmother, next door to his mother at Western Road, Crediton. By 1881 he is a potato merchant, living with the child of his half-brother, and widowed.2
