In 1861 Edwin is working on the farm next to his mother's home.In 1871 he is a patient in the Bristol Royal Infirmary. In 1871 his brother is living next door to the Hectors at 41 High Street, Crediton.
According to Stephanie Keates, (forwarded to Nick Heard by Della Pearson of the US) Edwin was a builder and went to the USA looking for work. He returned to England, and tried to persuade Sarah to emigrate with him to the States. As she was by then expecting her sixth child she was reluctant to make the journey.There is no record of Edwin in the 1881 census, when Sarah is shown as married, living with her children and no husband. Edwin "eloped" to America with Sarah's best friend. He felt he had left his family well provided for.The woman with whom he abandoned Sarah allegedly killed herself.Edwin supposedly changed his name to Frank Green. It is believed that Sarah heard nothing further from him. Edwin eventually remarried, to a Rose M?, and in 1911 thinking herself widowed Sarah remarried.Supposedly Edwin/Frank always spoke of Sarah and her family with tears in his eyes. Rose wrote to Reginald Fey in 1924. Joan Bagnell has letters from her Aunty Edna supposedly confirming these details.A likely candidate for Edwin/Frank can be found in the US Federal Census returns as described here.
Rose was born 9in New York of German parents.
